At $19, you expect a Sauvignon Blanc to be good, but not memorable. Yet this wine is notably fresh and full-bodied, with ripely herbaceous flavours, deep, dry and lasting. Awarded five stars by Winestate, it also scooped a gold medal at the New Zealand International Wine Show 2008.

Right from the start, Mount Riley was enthusiastic about its 2008 Sauvignon Blanc. ‘We were excited by the quality of the fruit coming into our winery early in the harvest,’ the winery reported in June, ‘and the talk of the town was of 2008 being the dream vintage.’ When heavy rain was forecast, Mount Riley was able to react quickly. Being a self-sufficient producer, with its own vineyard equipment, vineyard staff and winery, proved a huge advantage.

The wine was made by Bill (‘Digger’) Hennessy and his successor, Matt Murphy (who recently married the founder’s daughter, Amy, Mount Riley’s general manager.) The grapes were crushed, destemmed and pressed, and the juice was cool-fermented in stainless steel tanks, to preserve its fresh, incisive aromas and flavours. ‘We were ruthless at the blending stage,’ recalls Amy. ‘We really wanted to protect the quality of wine under the Mount Riley brand, from a vintage which was not easy, so we’ve created a number of sub-brands and kept the best for Mount Riley.’ It shows.

Weighty, vibrant, concentrated and finely balanced, Mount Riley Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2008 is a great buy at under $20. A dry wine (3.9 grams/litre of residual sugar), it’s recommended for drinking from now to 2010, as an aperitif or with seafood, salads and pasta.

Marlborough’s warm spring in 2007 resulted in even fruit set and prosperous yields. We were excited by the quality of early picks and the 2008 vintage was talked up as the “dream vintage”. Mother Nature however had the last say as repeated and intense rain was forecast mid-vintage. Luckily, the low yields on Mount Riley’s 280 acres of company owned vineyard meant that most of our fruit was ripe for the picking prior to the rain. Being a self sufficient company with our own winery, vineyard equipment and staff - which we call “earth to glass winemaking” - meant that we were able to operate around the clock prior to the rains to get most of our fruit in , hence avoiding dilution and disease. A final quality control was implemented at blending - only Mount Riley’s finest parcels of Sauvignon Blanc were put under the Mount Riley label.

Our 2008 Sauvignon Blanc is a blend from several vineyard sites throughout the Marlborough region, with over 90% from the Wairau Valley. Grapes were crushed and destemmed prior to pressing and fermentation was induced by the introduction of carefully selected yeast strains. We fermented in stainless steel at cool temperatures to preserve the lifted aromatics in this wine.
