Marlborough's cool climate and long growing season means our wines have vibrant and pure fruit flavours, while site diversity allows us to craft wines that are truly representative of the best of our region in each vintage.

No visit to Marlborough is complete without a visit to Mount Riley’s cellar door. "

Our Vineyards

17 Valley

Our iconic 17 Valley vineyard is predominantly planted in Pinot Noir, which grows alongside Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Viognier, Syrah and Malbec. It’s our furthest site from the Richmond Ranges and so gets the least amount of rainfall. That combined with clay based soils (and beautiful views of the Pacific ocean) make it a cracking site to grow grapes.

Anderson (Old Road)

This central Wairau site is the hub of our vineyard operations with all of our machinery based here. The tractor sheds are a veritable man-cave extravaganza – the vineyard’s not bad either! The top terrace has deep silt deposits perfect for Chardonnay and Riesling while the free draining soils of the lower terrace are better suited to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. This site often produces some of our top Sav with our 17 Valley Sauvignon Blanc coming off the vineyard. Our vineyard operations with all of our machinery based here. The top terrace has deep silt deposits perfect for Chardonnay and Riesling while the lower, stonier terrace is suited to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.

Litchfield

This is the largest of our vineyards and a versatile site. Deeper silts with higher water holding capacity means it’s essentially dry farmed. It’s planted in a whole host of varieties and provides a classic Marlborough character to our Sauvignon blend.

Dillon (Renwick)

Our most photographed vineyard with fantastic views looking North to the Richmond ranges and the mighty peak of Mount Riley (which is 1,314 meters high). Planted almost exclusively in Sauvignon Blanc it has typical Rapaura soils of deep river shingle which are free-draining. The warmer soils provide a riper flavour component to our Sauvignon Blanc blend and the wines always exhibit a certain minerality – must be something to do with all those stones.

Waihopai

Right on the western edge of the Marlborough winegrowing region, this vineyard is well away from the influence of the cooler sea breezes off the Pacific Ocean. The warmest of our sites during the day and the coolest by night, make it a perfect site for Pinot Noir and an interesting blend component for our Sauvignon Blanc.

Winery

The Pacific Ocean moderates temperatures on the vineyard surrounding our winery and cellar door. Soils are silt loam soil and low vigour so the block is cropped at moderate yields and it’s always one of the first blocks harvested each year. Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are grown on this site.

Our Growers

We also work closely with a selected group of independent growers. They are chosen not only for their ability to produce great fruit for us, but also because we believe their vineyard sites add something special to our wines. Blending from multiple vineyard sites gives us the opportunity to create wines of greater complexity making them more interesting for you to drink.
